The global fight against polio has seen remarkable progress, bringing the world closer than ever to eradication. However, as long as the virus exists anywhere, children everywhere remain at risk. In Uganda, while the country has made significant strides in immunization, certain pockets of vulnerability persist, threatening to undo decades of hard-won gains.
The Situation in Teso
In the Teso sub-region, ensuring every child is protected against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases remains a complex challenge. While urban centers often report adequate immunization coverage, the situation in remote and hard-to-reach rural communities paints a different picture.
Several barriers contribute to persistently low immunization rates in these areas. The sheer distance to the nearest health centers, coupled with poor road infrastructure, makes accessing routine vaccines an arduous task for many mothers. Additionally, vaccine hesitancy, fueled by deep-rooted myths and misinformation, continues to hinder uptake. Without concerted efforts, these vulnerable communities could easily become breeding grounds for outbreaks.
SAF-TESO's Health Outreach
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Shine Africa Foundation – Teso (SAF-TESO) has intensified its health outreach initiatives. We understand that bringing vaccines to the people is crucial for bridging the access gap.
Through organized mobile health camps, SAF-TESO delivers essential immunization services directly to remote villages. Our teams conduct exhaustive door-to-door sensitization campaigns, addressing fears and dispelling myths surrounding the polio vaccine. This work is made possible through strong collaborations with Village Health Teams (VHTs) and strategic partnerships with district health offices, ensuring our interventions are aligned with national health priorities.
Community Voices
"Before the mobile clinic came to our village, I had to walk for hours carrying my baby just to reach the health center. Sometimes, I would get there only to find the vaccines were out of stock. Now, my child is fully immunized, and I have peace of mind," shares Akello Mary, a mother from a rural community in Serere District.
"The support from SAF-TESO in mobilizing communities has made our work as health workers much more effective. When the community understands the value of the vaccine, they come forward willingly," notes a local district health officer.
Every Dose Counts
The success of polio eradication hinges on reaching every single child. It is not enough to receive just one dose; completing the entire vaccination schedule is vital for building robust immunity. High immunization coverage is essential for achieving herd immunity, which protects those who cannot be vaccinated and creates a formidable barrier against the virus's spread.
Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, SAF-TESO is committed to integrating polio immunization with broader maternal and child health programs. By embedding vaccination efforts within our comprehensive health access pillar, we aim to build resilient health systems that can sustain high coverage rates over the long term.
Eradicating polio is a collective responsibility. Together, we can ensure that every child in Teso, and across Uganda, has the opportunity to grow up healthy, strong, and free from the threat of polio.
